An underwire is the frame that gives lingerie its structure. As well as in bras and corsets, metal or plastic underwires are used to shape the neckline of swimsuits and dresses. A metal underwire helps a bra keep its form and shape. It also stops the fabric from squeezing the body, making the garment more comfortable and improving its look.

Types of Bra Underwire

By material, bra underwires fall into two groups: metal and plastic.

Metal Underwire

Metal underwires are one of the most common lingerie components, produced to preserve the shape and silhouette of bras. Many bras contain them. They are mostly made of steel, and no allergenic materials are used.

Plastic Underwire

• Metal underwires are chosen for their long service life.

Disadvantages of Underwire Bras

• They should be taken off before sleeping; wearing them overnight can distort the shape and feel uncomfortable.
• Because they hold the body more firmly, you may feel more pressure around the rib cage.
